The 4 models Transit seamlessly into the next model, making it a perfect series to fit for combo sets.
T100 - The Tour Iron is a Dual Cavity Design Forged with a lighter support bar running across the centre behind the face. The rear brazed instead of being welded (about 10 times the temperature) together with their high density D18 Tungsten being smaller and placed lower especially on the longer irons to achieve higher launch.
T150 - The Tour Distance Irons is also a Dual Cavity Design. Pretty much the same design as the T100 with a slightly bigger footprint. Muscle Channel had also been moved closer to the face with a thicker support bar to improve Feel and Ball Speed. Heavier and smaller tungsten to bring the weight backwards and lower for higher launch and tighter dispersion. This iron is a reminiscent of the AP2.
T200 - Player’s Distance Irons is a Hollow Iron with improved support on the Max Impact Core and with an improved design on the Back Plate with what looks like acoustic chambers which resonates much better. Improved Feel and sound more solid with the new position of the Max Impact Core together with the Dual Taper Forged L Shape Face. Well Positioned D18 Tungsten Weights to help launch the ball better to achieve high Descent Angle even with a stronger loft.
T350 - Game Improvement Irons is also a hollow iron which has the same design philosophy as the T200 but with a larger footprint, Max Impact Core and a Forged dual Taper L Shape Face. Stronger Loft lower CG (with D18 Tungsten) but still launch with great ease. Best Upgrade from your older game improvement model and may be the best looking and feeling irons in its class. Back piece also features similar design as the T200 except with more detailed acoustic chambers.
A common feature of all 4 models is Variable-Bounce Sole designed with the involvement of the Vokey Team from their expertise in sole interaction with the turf from the wedge design so that the irons get thru the turf with ease, even for the T350 which has the widest sole of them all.
Finally, why shortchange yourself by getting it off the shelves when you can have them customised for the same price with option of being able to make it a combo set.

First, let us take a look at what Lie Angle and how it can affect your shots patterns. The Lie angle is Formed by the Centre axis of shaft on the club and the sole resting flat on the ground line.
Based on the 3 pairs of graphics below, Left is Upright, with the Toe Up, ball likely to start left of Target, Centre is Correct Lie, ball likely to start Straight and the right pair, Lie Angle is Flat with Toe Down, ball likely to start right. Illustrations is for RH golfers and thus opposite direction is true for the LH golfers.
How often when you were told that your Lie Angles were too Upright or too Flat when you place your clubs at address before you take your golf swing.
Your fellow golfer is not wrong, he or she is just making a guess by looking at your club sits on the ground at address based on their personal experience. The fact is address lie angle is never the same as the impact lie angle, yes, even for the single plane swing. First we get on the standard swing. Take a look at the address and impact position of the same clip, using shaft axis in relation to the base of the tall tree behind golfer.
Notice the difference of the hand position vs the impact position? They are entirely different to just based on posture and hand position. There is still shaft droop during the swing which makes it even flatter. Which makes the difference even for the single plane swing. Essentially, this is because the CG of the head is in front of the shaft and at high speed, that CG will try to get in line with the axis of the golf shaft, thus causing the shaft droop. Before moving onto how to check for your lie angle, I would like to bring your attention to another specification which is used to measure lie angles on the golf club – the Grooves or Scoring lines aka score-lines. Most Golfers would have assumed that the Grooves on their club is parallel to the sole. This only happens in the perfect world likely to be on the drawing board. In face with commercialization, speed and cost had become a very important factor and grinding of the sole no longer require the skills and cost of the expert craftsman. The results became obvious. Even the biggest Tools supplier have conflicting opinions, Relations of score line and face angle. | (ralphmaltby.com) and Measuring-Adjusting Golf Club Angles.pdf (mitchellgolf.com). My personal preference has always been Centre of the Sole in contact with the ground at impact with the clubface squared to the target.
Just an example, if the Grooves are 3° more upright than the sole based on sole measurement and if your angles are adjust based on the grooves, means the toe will be down at impact by 3°, If you’re in the first cut, the toe of your clubhead would be in contact with the grass before impact. You will lalso be loosing energy before impact.
How you determine your lie angles?
Is this the way?
Most likely, you’re getting your address lie angle.
Now we move on to the dynamic lie angle check. 2 Most common way. Marker and Lie board.
Both methods are great with fitter must take into consideration condition of the ball striking surface like Grass Range or Range Matt. Even the thickness of the Lie Board Used.
Both Methods are great when the procedure put into fitting the lies and set out correctly and followed thru by the individual fitter consistently.
Notice anything wrong with the picture?
The grooves are not parallel to the marker bar in the loft and lie machine? It’s off by quite a few degrees. You may have the best equipment in the world but if the operator is not trained to do the job right, finished products are never going to be good. Find the correct person that may cost more but does a good job at what he does. Likely, he doesn't want you to come back with the same problem.

The world is opening up! Thank goodness for that!
Everything is recovering at a break neck pace, and the supply chains around the world are bing stretched to their limits.
Like many other industries, the golf industry is starting to feel the knock on effects on being locked down for so long.
There’s a massive spike in demand for new equipment, so much so that we need to put an appointment system in place to prevent getting overwhelmed.
Beyond that, the other reason we need to have an appointment system is that the whole industry is experiencing a shortage of components.
Most fitters and club builders who didn’t, are already running low on basics, such as grips, and just can’t get shafts, etc.
Even massive suppliers like Golfworks are completely out of stock and back ordered on the Golf Pride Tour Velvet 360, the most commonly used grip in the world.
The largest OEMs in the world, like Titleist and TaylorMade aren’t spared either.
Lockdowns in China, and Vietnam have created a supply vacuum, and many orders have been pushed back.
If your order has been affected, we'll contact you to see what you'd like to do with your order.
If you do decide to cancel your order, do bear in mind that orders are on a first come first served basis, which means your order could get pushed back even further.

Players Distance Irons, and now Tour Distance Irons –
“What are they?”
“Are they suitable for me?”
These are the 2 questions we get a lot from customers coming in for new iron sets.
Most of us have heard of Distance Irons or Game Improvement Irons. But now there’s Players’ Distance Irons and Tour Distance Irons!
They’re essentially the same thing.
However, they started life known as Game Improvement Irons. Essentially irons that were created to enable you to play once in a while and still enjoy the game without taking it too seriously.
Eventually, the golf industry found golfers who were a little more serious about their game, but who faced certain challenges, which there is a huge market of, a perfect target market for Game Improvement Irons. Many of these golfers wanted more distance, and that is something they could easily deliver.
Typically, this was due to having stronger lofts.
Make a 7 iron with a 5 iron loft and you will launch it lower, hit it longer, and possibly buy the irons.
We’re not kidding. In a traditional iron set, a 7 iron is around 35 degrees, and its 5 iron is around 27 degrees. In a modern Game Improvement Iron set or Distance Iron set, a 7 iron is 28 degrees, just 1 degree weaker than in a traditional iron set’s 5 iron! And the Game Improvement Iron’s 5 iron is typically 21 degrees, essentially a 3 iron in a traditional iron set!
In fact, lofts got stronger and stronger until longer irons became unusable, and had to be replaced with 7 woods, 9 woods, and hybrids.
And this is meant for people who want help with their game?

Until recently, lower handicap golfers and pros on the Tour preferred lofts closer to traditional lofts instead of the stronger lofted irons.
This is because while distance makes a huge difference on Tour, what most Tour pros want from that distance is to be able to hit a shorter iron on their approach shots.
One of the reasons for this is that it’s a lot easier to stop an 8 iron on the green than it is to stop a 6 iron, and a big factor is spin and trajectory.
With a short iron, you can launch it high and land it soft.
You can’t do that if your 8 iron is lofted like a 6 iron!

If you’re not familiar with Forge & Weld, check out our last blog, we wrote about how modern forge weld construction methods enable club makers to create sealed cavity clubs and move the center of gravity where it could never be placed before.
This meant that strong lofted clubs could be launched high and still land soft, so you get the best of both worlds - the distance and the height.
We first saw these in TaylorMade’s P790 irons which took the golfing world by storm. These were followed by their P770 irons.

Not to be left behind, Titleist got into the sealed cavity game and launched the T100, T100S, T200, etc.
These became known by various names. Generally, to distinguish them from Titleist’s forged iron MB and CB series, these fell into the Players’ Distance irons category.
The T100 was a sealed cavity iron but was widely played on Tour. Then the strong lofted version was introduced. Titleist then started referring to the T100 as the Ultimate Tour Iron, and the T100S became known as the Tour Distance Iron.
The T200 offers a little more forgiveness, and then became their Players’ Distance Iron, since Players’ Irons traditionally offered a little more forgiveness than Tour Irons.
See how things start to get confusing?
Then there’s the T300, which is even more forgiving than the T200, and is what we think of as a typical cavity backed Game Improvement Iron, and which Titleist also refers to as a Game Improvement Iron.
And then there’s the T400, stronger lofted than the T300, but with a sealed cavity to launch it higher, which Titleist calls their Players’ Super Distance Iron.
The golf industry hasn't quite settled on what a Tour Distance Iron is yet, but in our minds the Titleist T100 and T100S, and TaylorMade P770 possibly fill that category, the Players' Distance Iron category would then be filled by the Titleist T200 and TaylorMade P790.

In recent months, there has been a resurgence among keen golfers in looking for “pure forged” or fully forged irons. Perhaps it’s the sleek “katana” and “crafted” styles that have dominated the marketing in this style of irons, and they’re usually of Japanese origin, which plays to these irons’ cultural and historical origins.
But are fully forged irons really better?
We spoke to our Master Fitter, Jef Goh about this, and his first reaction was this, “Japanese blades have a very hard cutting edge, but the back of the blade is soft, to prevent the blade from breaking… but old metals can never beat new metals, like titanium and high tensile carbon steel.”

And as a custom golf shop, we’ll be the first to admit that “feel” plays a large part in golf, how a player strikes the ball, and in the enjoyment of the game.
Feel is actually feedback, and helps golfers make adjustments based on how they’re striking the ball.
In the old days, a badly struck ball will send vibrations up the shaft and into the golfer… ouch!
A “softer” feeling club meant that off centre strikes didn’t send as much vibrations up to the golfer.
A softer club head also meant a lower frequency sound when striking the ball, and a harder club head will give a higher pitched “click”.
And so, we tend to associate a lower frequency sound when using a soft or forged iron, and when we hear a high frequency sound, we associate that with vibrations going up our arm and a harder usually cast iron head.
Our experience fitting golfers with extensive experience with forged irons confirms this.
TaylorMade’s P790 and P770 irons are extremely soft, in that they send almost no vibrations to the golfer because the heads are designed to absorb so much vibration. But many golfers experienced with forged irons say they feel hard. That’s because the emit a high pitched “click” when struck well.
So, feeling “hard” is essentially just acoustics.

Again, this is no longer true. Forged clubs like Titleist’s CB and MB series are bendable up or down 2 degrees at the factory. As Titleist’s custom shop we can bend them 4 degrees either way.
Modern “forge and weld” clubs like Titleist’s T100, T200, T300, TaylorMade’s P790 and P770, can be bent 2 degrees at the factory, and as their custom shop we can do up to 3 degrees.
Modern cast clubs like TaylorMade’s SIM Max Irons have a built in soft spot for bending, just like Ping’s notched hosel, and even though they are cast, can be bent a full 4 degrees at the factory, double that of forged clubs.

For example, with a forged iron, it is very difficult, in fact near impossible to move the centre of gravity to make the club more playable.
Once casting became commonplace, cavity backed clubs with more extreme CG placements to the sides and back, made irons more forgiving, launch more easily, etc came onto the scene.
None of this would have been possible with forging.
More recently “forge and weld” club heads started becoming the norm.
Forge and weld is a new manufacturing technique that enabled the sealed cavity design.
This not only makes the clubs look a lot cleaner, almost like a blade, but allows club designers to move the CG to places that were impossible with forged or cast irons – right behind the impact zone, for a club that can be even more forgiving than any cavity backed iron.
This was the technology that made TaylorMade’s P790 and P770 a huge success, quickly followed by Titleist’s T100-T300 irons.
Granted, they're not "forged by craftsmen" from a single piece of metal, but they are able to incorporate all the right materials at the right parts of the club head, from ultra light titanium, to heavier tungsten to give the club the most forgiveness and the best feel.

I noticed something strange with our customers.
A lot of them spend time picking the right irons, the right driver, and even trying out hybrids.
But for some reason, they often don’t pay the same attention to picking fairway woods.
In fact, we often see customers with the latest driver and irons, and 10 year old fairway woods in their bags.
Another very interesting observation is that many golfers use the same model fairway woods as their driver.
The logic is that they want them to “feel” the same, and if they have been fitted for a driver, and they needed a low spin driver, then they should also need a low spin fairway wood right?
That logic is flawed because we usually hit our driver off the tee and fairway woods from the fairway (or rough). Also driver heads are much taller and deeper, meaning there is the opportunity to place the CG much further back and below the ball, both of which help to launch the ball high, which are helped by low spin, whereas you might want more spin to help you get the ball up of a tight lie on a fairway.
So, just using the same model as your fitted driver isn’t doing yourself any favours.
In fact, modern balls are usually low spin relative to balls from a few years back. And if you couple that with a low spin fairway wood, that could be the reason you’re struggling to hit your fairway woods off the deck.
On that note, we find that a very useful first question that we ask customers who want to get their fairway woods sorted out is, "where do you usually play your 3 wood from?"
👉 Click here to book your club Demo (15 mins, Free)

We find that a good starting point to start building out a set of fairway woods is to find out what your primary use of a 3 wood is. Is it as a backup driver, or do you use it mainly for your second shot on long par 5s for that Eagle set up? Or do you use it for both?
If you use it off the tee a lot, then you might want to go low spin and with a stronger loft, maybe 13-14.5 degrees. And if you’re going that route then we really recommend you try out the TaylorMade 300 Mini Driver, which will give you all that, and much more forgiveness than any 3 wood we have tried.
If you use your 3 wood off the deck, then you might want one with more spin and more conventionally lofted 15 degrees.
That said, if you want your longest fairway wood to work off the deck, but you struggle with a conventional 3 wood, you might want to go to a weak lofted 3 wood or a 4 wood at about 16.5 degrees loft. TaylorMade’s SIM Max D 3 wood is made to 16 degrees specifically for this purpose.
Depending on why you’re struggling off the deck, we might match the head with a heavier or lighter shaft with a mid to low kick point and trimmed to maximise your launch angle.

Now that we have the starting point in your fairway wood set, we can go ahead and work out your distance gaps for the next few fairway woods.
If your first fairway wood is a strong 3 wood or Mini Driver, then your next club will likely be a 4 wood at around 16.5 degrees, and then a 7 wood, hybrid or your irons
If your first fairway wood is a standard 3 wood, then you would typically go with a 5 wood as your next club, and thereafter a 7 wood or hybrid or your irons
If you went with a weak lofted 3 wood or a 4 wood for your first fairway wood, then a good next club will be a 7 wood.
A number of our customers, particularly seniors, have been surprised at how well they hit a 7 wood. With lower swing speeds the additional loft really helps.

There’s no fixed answer for that because there’s golfers who prefer fairway woods and golfers who prefer hitting irons. And then there’s hybrids, and golfers who love them and golfers who hate them.
A good rule of thumb is to find the longest iron that you can hit consistently. Then go and try a bunch of hybrids and fairway woods to fill the gap between your irons and you long fairway woods.
What’s important is that you play better golf with the 14 clubs in your bag.

So, after we tested the TaylorMade 300 Mini Driver on the course, we’ve been getting a lot of enquiries on it.
And most of them are about how different it is from the SIM2 Max or any other “normal” driver, and whether there’s any difference from a 3 wood.
Let’s dive right in.
First, the specs.
A “normal” driver typically has a shaft between 45” and 45.5”, with some going up to 46” which is the limit for USGA conforming clubs. The 300 Mini Driver on the other hand, has a 43.5” shaft. The one we tested on the course was built to 44”.
The 300 Mini Driver also has a little more loft than a “normal” driver, with options for 11.5 or 13.5 degrees, and normal drivers typically have lofts between around 8-12 degrees.
Both the shorter shaft and having more loft, make the 300 Mini Driver a lot easier to control than a “normal” driver.
It does have a smaller head than a “normal” driver’s 460cc head (this is 300cc), but it is surprisingly forgiving.
In our on course test, the 300 Mini Driver did not miss a fairway all day!
Also after rigorous testing, we know that it has a much tighter dispersion than “normal” drivers.
It does carry a little shorter than a driver, if you’re hitting your driver well. So far, 8 in 10 amateurs we’ve fitted hit the 300 Mini Driver longer than their own driver before it was properly fitted.
So, if you’re struggling with your driver, you owe it to yourself to give the 300 Mini Driver a try.

Phil Mickelson who’s not endorsed by TaylorMade carries one Mini Driver in his bag, plus spares.
Dustin Johnson also carries one, but he’s endorsed by TaylorMade.
If you’d like the details check out our main review of the TaylorMade 300 Mini Driver.
The main difference is the head size, in particular the height.
This makes the 300 Mini Driver much easier to hit off a tee than a 3 wood.
From a specification perspective, a typical 3 wood is 43” to 43.25”, and the 300 Mini Driver we already know is 43.5”, marginally longer, and with less loft than a 15 degree 3 wood.
All this makes it easier to hit, and to launch longer off the tee than a 3 wood.
However, the tall face height makes the CG higher than a 3 wood.
This, together with having less loft, and a longer shaft makes this harder to hit off the deck than a 3 wood.
Not impossible, because we did hit it off the deck in our on course test, but it certainly isn’t as easy as a 3 wood off the deck.

Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson both use them as spare drivers.
Personally, we think that it’s a great club to have when the course that you’re playing needs a club that that’s length and where you need the control off the tee, since it does carry a little shorter, but with a much tighter dispersion pattern.
Alternatively, come in and see if this hits it longer than your main driver. Many customers have found that it does, and then they have the option of fitting their main driver, or fitting this and seeing what does better.

Let’s say you found that the TaylorMade 300 Mini Driver should be your main driver, your next club should be or 4 or 5 wood, something between 16.5 and 17 degrees.
Don’t worry, we can help you sort that out so that you have proper gaps between all your clubs. We cover this in our Distance & Direction Guarantee (Terms & Conditions Apply).

Well, technically, yes you can.
However, or most mainstream or big brand drivers (TaylorMade, Titleist, Callaway, etc), the club will not feel right, because the head will be too light, even if we changed the removable weights to heavier weights, which will then change the head’s launch characteristics.
We have however had success with doing that with a Krank driver head.
Since we're also the custom shop for Krank Golf, we can arrange for you to try together with the TaylorMade 300 Mini Driver or any other TaylorMade, Titleist, Mizuno, Srixon driver heads as these have all appointed us as their custom shop.

An elated customer exclaimed, “my driver is finally longer than my 3 wood!”
He came to us after he saw one of our driver fitting ads online.
Prior to starting to take measurements, we had a chat about what he wanted out of his driver fitting.
He said: To hit his driver longer than his 3 wood, something he had never done in his life.
After our chat, we had a hunch that his swing wasn’t bad – if his swing was bad, he wouldn’t be able to hit his 3 wood.
A few swings at our simulator and range confirmed this.
I was impressed by how he hit most of his clubs in the sweet spot. The strange thing was that he hit his driver towards the heel.

Well at least now we know why.
It’s puzzling, but at least we know it’s him losing distance because he’s striking the heel of his driver.

To help compensate for his driver heel strikes, he had already previously purchased the TaylorMade SIM2 Max driver which features TaylorMade’s Twist Face to compensate for heel and toe strikes.
However, he was still losing a lot of distance from his heel hits.
As official TaylorMade club fitters we understand how the Twist Face was developed and how it works.
On heel strikes, the clubface tends to be more open, so the TaylorMade Twist Face is designed to reduce the loft and close the clubface slightly to prevent missing right.
We increased his loft slightly, and took more measurements. Not only did this compensate for TaylorMade’s Twist Face, which wasn’t actually helping him, but in fact, causing him more problems by reducing the loft.
Interestingly, increasing the loft also caused him to strike the ball less on the heel and closer to the centre of the clubface, just as he did with the rest of his set.
This is a problem that we’ve seen in a number of professional golfers, who are great iron strikers and great with their driver but struggle with fairway woods.

With the few professional golfers we work with who struggled with this, they tended to strike their fairway woods closer to the toe, because visually they saw the ball closer to the heel when the set up, so they adjust until they see the ball in the centre, which is in fact, aligned to the toe.
We simply adjusted their fairway wood setup, the parallax error went away, and they hit their whole bag great.
Could this be the same problem that our customer was facing?
Since his challenge was heel strikes and not toe strikes, we simply did the opposite of what we did for those pro golfers.
We increased his loft more, and increased his lie angle as well.

With this minor adjustment, he already started hitting his driver further than his fairway woods.
But now that he had an idea of what we could do for him, he thought of re-shafting his driver, which we did to optimize the way he loaded his shaft on his downswing which helped him pick up a few more yards.
If your told you have a certain problem in your golf swing, or the way you’re striking the ball, don’t just go out and look for a compensation for that.
Our customer bought a driver that compensated for his heel strikes. That didn’t help him, it actually hurt his distance even more.
Everyone's swing, build, eyes are different.
So instead of guessing at your golf equipment, come in for a fitting session, and try out the exact clubs you want before you buy.
It won't cost you anything and even save you money!

Most golfers these days understand the benefits of getting a shaft that fits their swing.
As a result, many of our customers come to us with clubs newly bought, looking to get a shaft upgrade. This is true of all clubs, but we notice this far more with the driver than any other club.
If we get the opportunity, we always tell our customers not to do that. They are far better off getting a shaft and club head that work together from the outset.
First, it’s economics.
If you get fitted, and you get the shaft that works for you right from the outset, you don’t end up with an extra shaft that doesn’t work for you!
Next, you want to make sure that the club head is still the best club head for you once you get the shaft fitted. And there’s no way to know that until you get the shaft fitted.
But by the time you get the shaft fitted, you’ve already paid for the head. Even if you sell it, you’re still going to make a loss.
2 customers came in recently.
One came in to reshaft his Titleist TSi2 Driver that he had recently purchased.
The other came in to reshaft his TaylorMade SIM2 Max Driver that he had recently purchased.
They had both tried out both the Titleist TSi2 Driver and the TaylorMade Sim2 Max Driver before buying, and were both certain that was the driver for them.
Now all that was left to do was to get the shaft just perfect, right?
Wrong.
His reason for buying the Titleist TSi2 Driver over the TaylorMade SIM2 Max Driver was that he felt he was hitting the Titleist TSi2 Driver really solid compared with the TaylorMade.
It’s true that the Titleist TSi2 Driver is extremely forgiving on off centre hits, and generally loses very little distance on off centre hits. On the launch monitor in the store, he was also hitting it straighter with the Titleist.
He knew that with the right shaft, adjusted for both his swing and the club head, he could hit it more in the centre.
He is right, but only half right.
In our fitting studio, after getting the shaft fitted for his swing, he decided to try the same shaft adjustments on the same model shaft, but with the TaylorMade SIM2 Max Driver.
What a disaster!
At impact, his clubhead speed went up from 84 MPH to 89 MPH. After 20 hits he was consistently picking up 5 MPH, and hitting it straight! That translated to nearly 15 metres more carry than his driver!
This is not surprising given that the SIM in SIM2 stands for Shape In Motion which makes the club head more aerodynamic, and helps you pick up clubhead speed right from the transition to your downswing.
In the store he bought this from, the launch monitor showed that he was very long with this club, and that completely sold him.
When he went on the course, he was consistently long but didn’t hit a single fairway that day.
He came in and got fitted for a shaft. We managed to get him reasonably straighter, but since the Titleist TSi2 and Srixon ZX5 were both available, he decided to try them out as well.
With shafts in his spec and matched to these 2 heads, we hit the launch monitor in our fitting studio.
For him the clubhead speed at impact for the TaylorMade was still faster by 1-2 MPH than with either the Titleist TSi2 or the Srixon ZX5.
However, because his swing isn’t the most consistent, he was losing less distance on off centre hits with both the Titleist TSi2 and the Srixon ZX5 than he was with the TaylorMade, and he was hitting it both longer and straighter with both these clubs.
The other irony here is that on his fitted shaft, if he had bought the TaylorMade SIM2 Max Driver in 10.5 rather than 9 he would have also been hitting it straighter.
We always say the best driver is the driver that suits you!
This is a sad story of wasted money. And before you suggest it, yes, they could have swapped except they both needed different lofts!
At Smashing Drives' Custom Shop, you'll be able to try out any club with any shaft, at our golf simulation room, as well as our full length driving range.

This club was impressive enough for Phil Mickelson that he put it in his bag for the 2021 PGA Championship, and won.
Why is this significant, because Phil’s bag is all Callaway, except for this club, the TaylorMade Mini Driver.
What’s also significant, is that this win makes him the oldest player to ever win a major.
Now this last point is really interesting. Phil’s endorsed by Callaway, he can if he wanted to, get an endless supply of Callaway clubs.
At that specific event, Phil played the first 3 rounds with a Callaway X Forged UT Utility 3 Iron. When that got damaged, he swapped to a Callaway Mavrik Sub Zero 4 Wood.
Now, when his TaylorMade Mini Driver got damaged prior to the final round, he used his backup TaylorMade Mini Driver!
So in his whole bag, he’s got all Callaway clubs, except for his TaylorMade Mini Driver. AND, he doesn’t swap to a backup Callaway despite his endorsement, but carries not one, but at least 2 of the very same TaylorMade Mini Driver that he’s not endorsed by!
That’s saying loads about the TaylorMade Mini Driver.

Phil was playing with the 2019 Mini Driver, at the PGA Championship in May, before the 2021 was launched. He has since changed to the 2021 TaylorMade 300 Mini Driver and Dustin Johnson has put one in his bag as well.
So, I had no choice, but to take the TaylorMade 300 Mini Driver on the course.
This is a 307cc head driver, much smaller than the typical modern 460cc driver heads. The shaft is 43.7”, also shorter than the 45.5” to 46” length of a modern driver. In fact, in my hand, it felt very much like a driver of the 1990s, that were in truth, easier to control, but didn’t have the distance of a modern driver.
The plus, is this has all the modern forgiveness factors you expect of a modern TaylorMade driver, from their TwistFace to keep your shots consistent by controlling spin across different parts of the face, Thru-Slot Speed Pocket for faster shots all round, especially on thinned or topped shots.
Plus being made of Carbon and Titanium, weight can be distributed where it matters, low and to the back. According to TaylorMade, this makes it possible to hit off the deck, even though it has a face that is much taller than a typical fairway wood, since drivers are designed to be hit teed up.

The TaylorMade 300 Mini Driver comes in 11.5 and 13.5, with adjustable sleeve. I played 13.5.
Well not really a claim, but they do talk about it being small but forgiving and that it can be hit off the deck. So we’ll deal with that later since it’s covered in their other claims.
Here they say it has “an unmatched blend of distance, forgiveness and control”, “greater forgiveness than a standard fairway metal.”
Compared with my driver shots, this was slightly shorter. Given that it has a significantly shorter shaft, the distance loss was less than I expected. In fact, my guess is that most of the distance loss comes from it rolling less than a driver when it lands, due to the higher loft.
It was definitely longer than a 3 wood, and it rolled more than a 3 wood too.
What really amazed me, is it was like hitting a really forgiving 3 wood. Because of its size and height, it really inspired confidence.
Inspiring confidence without a healthy dose of forgiveness doesn’t mean much, but this club was very easy to hit solid, hits it very straight by default, but is very controllable as well.
In fact much easier to control than either a driver or 3-wood. I did not miss a single fairway that day with this club.
So, I’d say that this claim passes our Smashing Drives test!

Based on this claim, I was expecting a the ball to launch a little like a 3 wood, but with less peak height because of the “Low Spin” claim. It does have 1.5 degrees less loft than a 3 wood.
What I got was a very penetrating ball flight, unlike a typical 3 wood that relies a lot on spin to get it up, this ball launched and pierced.
So I’d say TaylorMade’s claim does pass our Smashing Drives test, but expect more of a driver style flight rather than a 3 wood style flight.

While TaylorMade claimed that the 300 Mini can hit “high towering shots from the fairway” I was a little skeptical at first, due to the tall face height.
After hitting this off the tee, and observing its ball flight, I was confident enough to hit this off the fairway.
Again, remarkably easy to launch high! Not a “towering shot” like you would expect from a fairway wood, with the slight balloon at the end, but again a high, penetrating ball flight.

I’m going to give this a “yes” as well. It made me feel like I was in the 1990s again, but as a much better golfer than I ever was thanks to all the modern game improvement technology.

I’d recommend coming in for a demo.
What to pull from your bag to include this? Because it’s so easy to hit off a tee, and can even be hit off the deck, I can imagine many players swapping out the 3 wood, and using this as a secondary driver, a little like Phil Mickelson’s setup.
This would be a great setup for strong iron players like Phil.
For me, I pulled out my 4 iron to make room for this club.

We’ve just got the brand new Mitsubishi Chemical Diamana PD fitting shafts in.
These expand the Mitsubishi’s fitting options from those provided by the Diamana TB.
Mitsubishi have designed these Diamana PD shafts to give you piercing low launch shots from your driver and fairway woods.
These shafts are optimized for the custom fitting process, and its summed up best by Mark Gunther, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for MCA Golf:
“Like TB shafts, Diamana PD are designed to maximize the modern dedicated fitting. Players can now see what a lower launching profile could add to their game while eliminating any distracting change in feel as they shift among weights and flexes.”

All our fitting shafts and heads feature our Smashing Fits system so that you can try out any head with any shaft at our full length driving range so you can see you ball flight, or our golf simulator for exact launch data.
With Mitsubishi’s Consistent Feel Design, any variation in butt OD, weight or balance point is minimised through the entire shaft series.
This means that any difference you might feel holding a club as we test different flexes, heads, etc will be minimised, enabling you to focus on which shaft is getting you better results.

They then combine this with Boron fibre to create a shaft with unprecedented strength and stability.

As we can see from the Mitsubishi Diamana PD and Diamana TB, they are part of a range of shafts created so that you can find the best shaft for you through fitting.
When we fit you we also determine how and where to trim a shaft, for example trimming from the tip or the butt will give you the same length, but affect your launch height, stiffness etc, and that can only be done after a fitting with a club fitter who knows what he’s doing.

For better or worse, the shaft change has made the club feel different, and for many, this increases another variable in their quest for the perfect club, and the perfect set.
But is the shaft really the heart of the club?
As a club fitter, I would love it if you believe that. Why? I’ll sell more shafts.
I would also want you to be on an endless search for shafts. Why? I’ll sell more shafts.
It’s the same with the golf industry at large, increase the variables, so they can sell more. Golfers tend to love the game, and many to the point of an “addiction” or “obsession”. The industry knows this, so the more confused they can make you, the more they will sell!
That’s why we offer our 12 month, 3 session Distance & Direction Guarantee.
Come in and get fitted, and cut down the variables, not increase them!
Now that I got that out of my system, I was thinking about whether a shaft is really the heart of the club.
I had to conclude “no”.
I noticed Sergio Garcia went from TaylorMade to Callaway and then back to TaylorMade.
One could argue that this might be for commercial reasons, that TaylorMade just gave him a better deal.
So I thought about it more, and noticed how Justin Rose went from TaylorMade to Honma, and is now a free agent using a mixed bag.
Sergio Garcia was once the world number 2. Justin Rose was once world number 1, just 3 years ago, so if Sergio Garcia could get a sweet deal, so could Justin Rose.
How is this relevant?

Justin Rose could have stayed at Honma, and used whatever shaft he wanted.
Instead he became a free agent, so that he could select his head and shaft combination, and not be tied into anyone particular head, while continuing to earn sponsorship dollars.
According to Golf Monthly, and Golf WRX, he’s currently using various different TaylorMade driver heads, TaylorMade fairway woods; a mix of Mizuno and Srixon irons; and Titleist wedges.
And they go on to detail the shafts he’s using with various heads.
As you can see, he mixes and matches the shafts and heads, and then mixes and matches the whole setup.
Incidentally, we’re the Singapore custom shop for TaylorMade, Srixon, Mizuno and Titleist. We’re also fitters for the Mitsubishi Chemical and KBS shafts that Justin Rose uses.

TaylorMade P790 Irons 2021 are definitely one of the most awaited irons this year. But are they worth the upgrade from previous models or similar irons. You decide based on our numbers from fitting customers, or come in for a no obligation demo.
]]>
Last week we brought you our first look at TaylorMade’s new P790 irons for 2021.
Loft has been kept the same with the 2019 model, a refreshing change from constantly strengthening lofts that has been the trend with club makers recently.
For the uninitiated, strengthening loft refers to making the clubface steeper so that the ball launches lower, and hopefully further. Essentially making a 7 iron a 6 iron, and a 6 iron a 5 iron. On its own, this is an unsustainable way of making a club hit longer. That’s why you see the longest iron these days is a 4 or even 5 iron, and no longer a 2 or 3 iron, and manufacturers have added more wedges to make up the set at the short end.
Back to the P790.
TaylorMade have kept the 7 iron loft at 30.5 degrees, but being hit with a similar clubhead speed, on an identical shaft (we can do this with our Smashing Fits system which allows us to match any shaft with any head, so you can try 2 heads with the very same shaft) we observed an approximately 2 mph faster launch speed, and it launched 1 degree higher than the 2019 model. There’s also less spin and peak height increased by almost 1.5 metres, increasing carry.

👉 Click here to book your iron set fitting session (1 hour, $125, waived upon purchase of any iron set, including $795 Smashing Fits Guarantee) (This link is to our Whatsapp, we will get back to you within a day.)
We noticed that 7 iron dispersion was also very tight, typically within about 5 meters between well struck shots, and badly struck ones. Of course we’re not talking completely duffed shots like missing the ball, or hitting an inch behind it, by badly struck shots, we mean toe hits, tops ,etc. 5 meters may sound like a lot, but how much greater is the distance of your current 7 iron between a well struck shot and a topped shot?
Quite honestly, we’re astounded by the forgiveness built into this head, especially with topped shots still gaining decent height, helped by the “Thru-Speed Pocket” aka the strange line in the sole of the club.
Heel and toe hits were also helped by the P790’s 30% increased sweet spot, and intelligent sweet spot placement over the 2019 model.

Of course the objective is to get the shaft fitted to your swing so that you stop the tops and the heel and toe hits.
Once we did that, and our customers were striking the sweet spot consistently, they were amazed at how soft the P790 felt, and how fast the club felt, even though it sounded quieter than the 2019 model.

If you have the 2017 P790, the 2021 model has a 60% larger sweet spot than that. In our opinion, that alone is worth the upgrade.
Compared to the 2019 model, the sweet spot is 30% bigger, and there are some interesting efficiencies picked up with the technology. The only way to know is to try them out for yourself at our golf simulator or full length driving range.

The much awaited TaylorMade P790 2021 or P790 3rd Generation irons have arrived.
The fitting heads for these irons have been fully adapted to our Smashing Fits system, so you can now try these heads with any of our shafts, alongside any other heads we have in our Smashing Fits system, Titleist, Srixon, etc, in our simulator room or full length range.
No other irons have changed the golf irons market in recent memory as much as the TaylorMade P790.
When it was first introduced, the additional distance and forgiveness it offered, finally came in a package that was acceptable to the more discerning golfer.

Looking at the 3 generations of P790s side by side, one can see how much sleeker and more “tour iron” looking each generation has become. The first 2 generations had a lot more visible technology, and the 3rd generation can pass for a muscle back in the bag, for a bit of “street cred” when your bag is left open near to you at the 19th hole.
Yes, I do fall into that category of golfers who likes my irons looking sleek at setup, and so I’ve put a picture here, right next to Titleist’s T100, T200 and T300 to give you an idea of how these look compared with Tour Irons, Players’ Irons, and Game Improvement Irons.

The P790 iron heads marry the best of cast and forged technology in an iron head. Forged heads are soft, and cast are hard. P790 iron heads’ bodies are cast from 8620 carbon steel so that they are strong and durable while enabling the new thin-walled design.
The face, where forging matters, is a 1.5mm forged 4140 steel L-Face. This gives you that amazing forged feel and the supreme flexibility gives you fast ball speeds and distance.
SpeedFoam Air, which Matt Bovee (Product Creation, Irons at TaylorMade) calls the “heartbeat of the new P790 irons”, is a new ultralight urethane that’s 69% less dense than the prior generation leading to significant weight savings of 3.5g at the very heart of the iron, which TaylorMade redistributes for additional forgiveness and playability.
Sound and feel are just as important, and the new SpeedFoam Air helps to provide both a satisfying “connected” feel at impact, and the “click” of the perfectly struck iron, that better players have become accustomed to getting from their players irons and muscle backs.

In another first for irons, the TaylorMade P790 features thin wall drive technology to safe weight and improve efficiency. This is something drivers have used for years, but no clubmaker has successfully implemented them in irons. Until now.
The P790 walls are reduced in thickness by up to 37.5% to remove mass from inefficient areas, to allow redistribution of weight to improve forgiveness, launch and centre of gravity placement.
The 2021 P790 has a whopping 31g of tungsten at the toe, double the previous model, and this makes them stable and extremely resistant to twisting on off-centre strikes, to help your ball fly straight and true.
Speaking of off-centre strikes, the 2021 P790’s area of maximum spring and speed is over 60% larger than the original P790, and up to 30% larger than the 2019 2nd Generation model.
A larger sweet spot won’t help you if it’s not placed properly. So key to TaylorMade’s Intelligent Sweetspot are the thousands of golf shots charted by TaylorMade’s iron development team to determine the most common impact points on the iron face. The sweet spot was then strategically shaped and positioned to capture more of those shots.
This paid off in testing with measurable increases in ball speed and distance compared to the prior P790 generation, because the sweet spot is now both larger, and better placed to provide performance where more golfers need it most.

That strange line at the sole of every generation of P790 returns for the 3rd Generation. If you’ve ever wondered what it is, it’s what TaylorMade calls the “Thru-Speed Pocket”.
Essentially, it’s a slot cut in the sole, so that the face flexes and rebounds when the ball is topped or struck low on the face. This helps lots of golfers since topping the ball is one of the most common mishits amongst golfers.
TaylorMade have changed the stock shaft on the 2021 P790 from the Dynamic Gold 105 to the Dynamic Gold 95. Better golfers will prefer the old shaft, and golfers who want a lighter shaft will probably want different options other than the Dynamic Gold 95.
If you don’t know your preference, you can arrange for a 15 minute demo of the 2021 P790 with any of our wide range of shafts, at our golf simulator or full length driving range.

The 3 wood. Is it a back up driver? Is it a true fairway wood? Should it even be in your bag these days? Find out here.
]]>
There’s a club that lots of people struggle with. Even more than the driver, and that’s the 3 wood.
Not as a backup driver, but as a full function club which you can hit from the tee box tee-ed up, or off the deck.
I don’t know if this is a case of golfers trying to console themselves, but many golfers have told me that with a 3 wood they “want to keep the ball down”.
That is a huge misconception, because most low handicappers and tour pros hit woods when they want to get some height in their shot.

My view is that you need a swing speed of 70-75 MPH to effectively use a 3 wood off the deck.
Any less than that, and you won’t have enough club head speed to launch effectively.
If you’re based in Singapore, come in and we can check your club head speed for you. But if you’re not, a rough and ready way to find out if you’ve got enough club head speed for the 3 wood is if you’re hitting the 3 wood less than 150m off the deck, you probably don’t.
That doesn’t mean that you can’t have a longer fairway wood, it just means we need to move you to more loft.
Our customers have benefitted most from going from a 3 wood, to a 4 wood or 5 wood.

That’s hardly surprising because the 3 wood off the deck actually launches lower than a driver off the tee.
So even if you’ve got a swing speed higher than 75 MPH, launch angle plays a big part.
One of our customers has a swing speed of just over 100MPH and used his 3 wood only as a backup driver.
His problem was that his launch angle was really low.
To help him with that, we needed to understand why he was launching it so low.
Was it angle of attack, dynamic loft at impact, kick point of his shaft… and the list goes on.
Sadly, there’s no way to “rule of thumb” that. If you want an actual reason, the only way is to come in and get measured.

All these variables are a good thing, because it means there’s potentially a lot we can do to help you.
Once we identify the reason for a low launch, we can do a number of different things:
And there are even more possibilities.

The thing is we need to know why you’re launching it low.
Fix 4 could be for the lower handicapper with a high swing speed who just isn’t confident in loading the club because of the way it feels on the downswing.
Whereas fix 2 is more likely for the golfer with insufficient swing speed.
Whatever your reason for struggling with a 3 wood, don’t go and buy another 3 wood before you get measured. You’re literally shooting in the dark, hoping to get the right 3 wood for you.

The #1 complaint we see with senior golfers, is that they no longer hit it as long as they used to.
The great thing about being senior, is that we have the maturity to ask for softer shafts to regain that distance – am I right?
Absolutely…
… NOT!
We might have the maturity, but going for a softer shaft doesn't help!
In a bid to regain distance, the most common mistake we see with senior golfers is that their shafts are too soft for them!
I’m hitting it longer today at 56, than I was when I was 40! And every senior golfer deserves to.
The key is to get equipment that works perfectly for you.

Like most seniors, he was going softer and softer with his shafts, and was getting annoyed because he wasn’t hitting the sweet spot.
He was told that he was getting a premium Fujikura shaft. Fujikura make great shafts, in fact, we offer them in our shaft line-up.
The thing is, most shaft makers have performance and entry level shafts, as does Fujikura.
His Cobra irons were fitted with Vista Pros, and they charged him $100 per shaft – for an entry level Fujikura!
No wonder he wasn’t getting the sweet spot – it wasn’t him, it was the shaft, which was too soft and not stable enough for him!

There were a few things that started working in his favour with this Titleist T300, Mitsubishi Fubuki MV combination.
The Mitsubishi Fubuki MV that we fitted him with are lighter, very slightly stiffer, but far more stable.
Being lighter, they helped him increase his swing speed. Going slightly stiffer takes into account that swing speed increase we’ve gotten him, and gives him the confidence to go for it. Something the shaft stability helps with as well, but shaft stability really makes sure that he hits it sweet.
And when he doesn’t, he benefits from the T300’s variable face thickness that Titleist has designed into the T300, that helps him get consistent distance and ball speeds no matter where on the face he strikes the ball.

In his quest to regain his lost distance, he was partially right in looking at the shaft. However, he was focussed on flex. When we consider shaft fit, we look at weight, flex, then stability, and not just flex. As you can see, flex might not even be the most important consideration in picking a shaft.
But the shaft also needs to match the head, that’s why we have our Smashing Fits system that enables you to come and demo fit any shaft to any iron head – because ultimately, the shaft and the head need to fit you – the golfer!

Instead, let us help you ascertain what works for you.
We’ve worked with enough seniors to know that swinging harder to make the clubs you used to play with work for you just makes your swing less efficient, and is counter productive. Doing what our customer who went softer and softer doesn’t work either for reasons we’ve already mentioned.

Titleist's T300 is designed for forgiveness.
While they are a game-improvement iron, they were designed as a mid-sized model (rather than an unwieldly oversized model). Its cavity back and uses 40 per cent more tungsten than its predecessor to launch high and long, while being more forgiving than ever.
A look inside the T300’s premium chrome finish to see how forgiving it really is.
It features the same D18 high density tungsten, and 2000 degree brazing process as other Titleist irons, ensuring that you get the best launch and optimal MOI for maximum forgiveness.
To help you get consistent distance and ball speeds no matter where on the face you strike the ball, Titleist has designed variable face thickness into the T300.
Finally, to improve feel and efficiency at impact, for more ball speed and better feedback, we find an enhanced polymer core, built into Titleist’s 2021 T300.
Why start at a 7 iron as your longest iron? Because it hits it as long or longer than most 5 irons our customers were carrying!

Enjoy this, go out and play 5 or 6 rounds and impress your flight mates, and maybe take some money or beer off them.

We want your ball where you want it to end up. And this is best achieved by making sure your clubs are sending the ball in the right direction, which is a combination of launch angle and spin.
Session 2 is usually charged at $60 base fee, and $15 per club. We’re including this (up to 8 clubs) in your Smashing Fits Guarantee. This means that you’re getting another bonus of $180!
Now that your clubs are completely consistent, you’ll find that there’s no more need to make any swing adjustments, and you’re getting better distance, direction and dispersion than ever.
No compromises in your swing means improved swing dynamics which might lead to even better distance, direction and dispersion. Which means that you might find gaps and need minor corrections in each clubs distance and direction again.

The T100/ T200 Combo Set is a real classic on Tour, with no less than Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Will Zalatoris and Cameron Smith wielding the T200 long irons and T100 short irons.
Hopping over to the other extreme, we’ve found that the T300/ U505 Combo Set doesn’t work quite as well.
What was not on our recommended list, which a customer came in requesting was the T200/ T300 Combo set.
We never thought of it as a Combo Set that we would recommend, just because the T200/ U505 set goes so much better together, and that’s eventually what he ordered.

The 4, 5 and 6 Irons of the T100S and the T200 are exactly the same loft, making it a seamless transition between sets.
The 4 Iron of the U505 is also exactly the same loft as both the T100S and the T200, so flowing form either set to the U505 is also completely seamless, and provides a perfect distance gap.
Specs only tell you a part of the story, but those specs got many of our customers interested in the T100S, T200 and U505.

We got a set of results like that, and thought he was the anomaly. Then we got more and more similar results. So we checked with Titleist, and we’re not wrong, the T100S is hitting longer and tighter.
In fact, more and more Tour Staff are starting to swap the T100 for the T100S, and many of them are playing with T200 and U505 long irons, since they fit perfectly.
I thought I'd leave you with a photo of the various Titleist Iron Combo Sets that worked the best for our customers.

We recently introduced you to Titleist’s latest irons, which make Titleist irons accessible to golfers of all skill levels.
Fitting units of the U505 utility iron have come in this week as well, and Titleist have told us that these are designed to be the perfect addition to their T100, T100S, T200, and even T300 2021 irons.
The U505 replaces the U510, but the U505 has a shorter blade length, to encourage working and shaping your shots, and so they will fit better with Titleist’s Tour Irons (T100, T100S) and Players’ Irons (T200).
Designed to hit it higher than traditional long irons, but with less spin than a hybrid, the U505 will definitely appeal to the better player.

Like the T100 and T100S, the U505 features a thinner forged stainless steel L-Face, with continuous cradle construction to provide a seamless striking surface and uniform leading edge.
Together with high density D18 tungsten weights, and aerospace industry’s 2000 degree brazing process to enable more efficient weight concentration for more precise CG placement and improved MOI.

This features a polymer core that compresses and causes the entire face to rebound back in shape to increase energy transfer, and hence distance.
No club, no matter how forgiving will pass muster with better players if it doesn’t feel and sound good.
So, besides adding even more forgiveness by shifting the CG back for soaring shots with less spin, the Engineered Muscle Plate is tuned for acoustics and vibrations to give the U505 a satisfying sound and feel at impact, while allowing weight to be shifted for precise CG and improved MOI.
Launched on Tour and designed to fit perfectly with the T100 and T100S, the U505 looks the part right next to these tour irons.
In fact, when Max Homa, winner of the 2021 Genesis Invitational, first saw and hit the Titleist U505, he loved it so much, he dubbed it "The Unit".
And you can see why once you look at it alongside the T100.

Looking at the U505 next to the T200, the U505 looks much more forgiving without losing the "workable" "tour" look.
That being said, the U505 is designed to go with the T200 and T300 as well, and this wouldn't be complete without showing you how they look along side the Players' T200, and the Game Improvement T300.

If there's any doubt that the guys at Titlelist know a thing or two about irons, we need look no further than this statistic.
Among the top 100 PGA Tour players, Titleist irons are #1.
In fact, one of the things we hear around the shop and driving range are players wanting to get “good enough” to one day have their own Titleist irons.
All irons were designed and built around Titleist’s 3Ds – Distance, Dispersion and Descent Angle.
The T100 is the most played iron on tour; the T100S is the stronger lofted, distance enhanced tour iron; the T200 is the players’ iron, and Titleist’s technologically most advanced iron; and the T300, the ultimate game improvement iron.
I’ve got to say, there’s not a lot of difference between the T100 and the T100S, except you’ll probably notice that the T100S looks a little stronger.
The T200 looks like a proper players’ iron at address, and even the T300 looks really good for a game improver. The top lines not too thick, and the offset doesn’t look too bad at all.

The T100 – the most played iron on tour, returns in a Generation 2 model for Titleist’s 2021 model lineup. This Generation 2 model incorporates the refinements from feedback given by Titleist’s tour pros.
Check out the bounce and sole of the T100, a topic we’ve written a lot about this in the last 2 weeks.
How Soles Affect The High Handicapper
How Soles Affect The Better Golfer
Titleist’s new variable bounce design is their "best-feeling ever". It’s designed with less bounce on the heel and more on the toe.
Three-time Major champion Jordan Spieth has gone on record saying how impressed he is by this sole setup, which is designed for improved turf interaction and feel.
Taking a look inside the T100, we see that Titleist uses high density D18 tungsten weights, and constructs the T100 with the aerospace industry’s 2000 degree brazing process to create an iron head without weld points and more precise CG placement for improved MOI.
Designed for precise control and industry leading feel, the T100 is a fully forged iron that looks like a blade at address thanks to its thin top line and minimal offset.
It is in fact a dual cavity iron with continuous cradle construction to ensure its face provides a seamless striking surface and uniform leading edge.
In particular, the Generation 2 T100’s 4i-7i faces were redesigned to provide slightly more spin for improved shot-shaping and stopping power.
Finally, the 2021 T100 are finished in Titleist’s new anti-glare brushed chrome.

The T100S is the stronger lofted version of the T100 tour iron.
These irons are designed to look and feel like a tour iron, but to give you some additional distance.
Stronger lofted irons tend to launch lower and not stop as well on landing, and Titleist has dealt with these in the 2021 T100S.
Being 2 degrees stronger across the set, Titleist has incorporated a Muscle Channel to move the CG lower so that the T100S continues launch your ball at the trajectory you would expect.
Other than that, the T100S is almost identical in styling, and incorporates the design elements featured in the Generation 2 T100.

This is the players’ distance iron in Titleist’s 2021 iron lineup.
The T200 is Titleist’s most advanced iron, combining sleek players’ iron looks with impressive distance.
The T200 is designed with a shorter blade, and with less offset than its predecessor. A narrower topline and thinner sole also give it more of a tour iron feel.
Fear not, the T200 is filled with hidden forgiveness features that potentially made it easier to hit than its predecessor.
Because of the T200’s tour looks and forgiveness, numerous tour players, including Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Will Zalatoris and Cameron Smith play T200 long irons and T100 short irons.
These set up together really nicely, as you can see here.
Taking a look inside the T200 reveals the multi-material hollow body that features an enhanced polymer core to improve both speed on off-centre hits and efficiency at impact.
The muscle plate helps save some weight and improve both feel and sound at impact.
The muscle plate weight savings then go into using additional high density D18 tungsten to to precisely place the CG for more forgiveness and an easier launch.
The T200 contains more tungsten than any other Titleist iron, and when you combine that with the same 2000 degree brazing used in the T100 and T100S, Titleist have created a club that has amazing MOI across the clubface.
Speaking of which, the clubface is a forged L-Face design that helps give the T200 a fast solid feel at impact.

Titleist's ultimate game-improvement iron, the T300 is designed for forgiveness.
While being a game-improvement iron, it is designed as a mid-sized model (rather than an unwieldly oversized model), has a cavity back and uses 40 per cent more tungsten than its predecessor, to help launch it high and long, while being more forgiving than ever.
A look inside the T300’s premium chrome finish to see how forgiving it really is.
It features the same D18 high density tungsten, and 2000 degree brazing process it’s other Titleist iron brethren, ensuring that you get the best launch and optimal MOI for maximum forgiveness.

]]>Game improvers see great improvements from having the right sole on their irons. But how about low handicappers and pros? Learn more.
]]>
Last week we wrote about how the soles on game improvement clubs are designed to really help you on the range but can wreak havoc on when you’re on the course.
In the course of the week, we’ve helped a number of high handicap players, out of their game improvement clubs or super game improvement clubs, and on to clubs that are a lot thinner soled, and in fact even easier to hit than their game improvers because they’re properly fit to their specs.
Not everyone has taken their clubs out on the course, but those who have, have all reported how much better their game has gotten because their irons can be easily hit from all lies!

To answer this, one needs to look no further than the changes Collin Morikawa made to his set earlier this month.
Collin Morikawa, sometimes called the human Iron Byron, had a 6 iron dispersion pattern similar to the tour average wedge dispersion pattern.
Most of the golfing world saw that as something to celebrate, but to Collin, that meant he could improve his short game further.
At the time, Collin was playing P7MCs in his 5 and 6 irons, and P730s in his 7-9 irons. If you’ve never seen P730s, these are muscle back blades that are still tour only for now.
The P7MCs are muscle cavity irons, and knowing he hit his 6 iron amazing, TaylorMade decided to try them in his 7-9 irons as well.
To cut a long story short, Collin started hitting his short irons even more amazingly.
And all of this helped him get the right height and the extra 3-4 yards that he used to need to draw the ball to get.

If you've been killing it on the range, but you're topping it on the course, chances are you're playing game improvement clubs, and those are literally killing your game.
Seems counterintuitive?
Let me explain.
👉 Come in and see if this is affecting your game. Free 15 min Fitting Session Now (Limited Appointments)
The more “game improvement” a club is, the thicker the sole is likely to be.
This is because that lowers the center of gravity, helping the ball get in the air. Helping the slightly thinned shot. Thicker soles also don’t dig, helping the slightly heavy shot.
Sounds like the perfect club right?
And you play golf on grass, not on a range mat.
👉 Come in and see if this is affecting your game. Free 15 min Fitting Session Now (Limited Appointments)
And the taller the grass and the worse the lie, the bigger the problem this is.
Ironically, most golfers who use game improvement clubs are also the same ones who are rarely on the nice lies in the middle of the fairway.
If you’re on a downhill lie, the back of the thick sole bounces off the grass causing you to thin it.
If you’re in the rough, the thick sole bounces off the grass before the ball on a heavy shot, causing a thinned shot. And thinned shots aren’t helped either since the thick sole won’t let you get steep enough to effectively “pick” the ball.
So whether it’s the lie or the swing, game improvement clubs just aren’t designed to improve your golf anywhere other than the range.
👉 Come in and see if this is affecting your game. Free 15 min Fitting Session Now (Limited Appointments)
And recently Collin Morikawa changed half his iron set specifically for the soles!
We’ll get into that a lot more next week.
But in the meantime, if you’ve been thinning your shots on the course, but hit it perfectly on the range, come down for a free assessment, it’s very likely the soles of your clubs.

“When I was 10 years younger, that would have gone another 10 meters!”
That’s something I hear at least 3 or 4 times a week.
Most golfers accept that as a fact of aging.
But it’s not true!
When I’ve told our customers this in the past, most of them took my word for it…
… I don’t know if they actually believed me, or it was just “hope” on their part, but they got me to work on their clubs 😀

Last week, a new customer whom I met during our Free Fitting Promotion, didn’t believe me, and challenged me to prove that to him.
The difficulty was that while all the customers with this complaint hit it longer after fitting, they didn’t have data from 10 years before their fitting – it was all anecdotal.
So, I went and looked for my own data.
Back then, I hit my 3 Iron 180 meters.
And so I hit my current irons on the launch monitor to see how I had “aged”.
By the time I got to my 5 iron, I was hitting it 180 meters.
Interesting.
This needed more investigation…
👉 You can do this too! Book your Free 15 min Fitting Session Now (Limited Appointments)
I started with the lie angle, because I know modern club lie angles have gotten stronger and stronger.
On my 40 year old stats, my 3 iron was a traditional 21 degrees. My current 5 iron that I was hitting the same distance was 24 degrees.
So I checked out the club length, and my current 5 iron is the same length as my 5 iron back then, and so actually shorter than my 3 iron back then.
Technology has improved so much that you no longer need loft to launch your ball high. Stronger lofts in modern clubs do help with distance, but ball flight is also much higher.
(Yes, that is the actual science behind the “trampoline face”)
Shafts have also gotten better, and over the last 20 years of club fitting, I’ve gotten better at matching shafts to heads, and to individual golfers’ swings.

During a fitting session earlier this week, we met a customer (let’s call him James) who just ordered a set of custom clubs from a well known brand.
James knew his specs, what lie angle he wanted, that he wanted his clubs half an inch long, etc.
When he came to us, we were really curious.
James was someone who had obviously seen the positive effects of club fitting, and even knew what specs to order his clubs in.
So why did he skip the club fitting process entirely this time?
James relates this story - When he was fitted the first time, he had a really good experience. But because the last set he wanted to get wasn’t carried by the same fitter, he went to a different fitter for his last club change.
He was pushy, and just tried to sell stuff to James that he didn’t need.
Unfortunately, such experiences are not as uncommon as you think.
During our 15 minute sessions which we conducted so many of in the last few weeks, many of our new customers told us that they wished they had come for fitting much earlier.

Wow, June was quite a month!
As we were running our Free 15 Minute Fitting campaign, I met up with 5 new customers every day on average, and our team engaged with literally hundreds of other new customers!
What our team learnt, especially from those who connected with us, wanting to improve their golf, but not wanting to arrange a time, was that...
... they were either waiting for their swings to stabilize, or
... they felt their game wasn’t good enough to deserve fitting, i.e., that they will be embarrassed to be fitted by a pro who’s worked with some of the best golfers in the world.
So, I thought I’d take some time to address these concerns.
You want to be able to use the same swing across all your clubs, if you don’t, you’ll be practicing different swings for each club, and there’s no chance that you’re swing will stabilize!
No one can master 13 different swings! Even Tiger took years to make just 1 swing change – what are the chances you can cope with 13!

One of the problems we see many golfers struggle with constantly, is the inability to achieve consistency.
They might be able to strike the ball well one day, and their game completely collapses the next.
Or they might be striking their irons well, and struggle with their fairway woods, and have that completely reversed one month later.
It’s exactly the same problem, and can be identified, and possibly even fixed during our 15 min Free Fitting Session.
=> Book your Free 15 min Fitting Session Now (Limited Appointments)
The problem is having to change swings from one club to another.
“Swing more upright for irons”, “swing flatter for your driver”, etc
Have you seen any of the top pros change swings? They might “appear” to be more upright or flatter from wedge through driver, but if you measure those swings in relation to their spine, most top pros have exactly the same swing.
That is the secret to their consistency - being able to use the same swing, over and over again, without compensation, to get repeatable results.

And if you’ve been coached, or watched Youtube videos, you’ll know that these are all caused by sidespin.
The most common way we see people try to fix this, is to change their swing. Afterall, “your equipment can’t be wrong” - right?
Unfortunately not. All equipment is made to fit the “average sized golfer”, within a segment of golfers (lower handicap, higher handicap, men, ladies, etc). However, we know that very few people fit that exact average.
What makes things worse is the “average” changes over time, and across brands.
That’s why you might hit your irons fine, but slice your driver. Or hit 1 particular fairway wood well, but not another. What’s happening then is that the series of compensations that you’ve made to hit that particular club, is working well at that moment.
But swing compensations need to be different across clubs, and so that particular compensation is not going to work on all your clubs. That being the case, you’ll never practice that compensation enough to make it work consistently.
=> Book your Free appointment now
Which brings me to the second way to fix your errant “sideways” shot - fix your equipment.
We can do this by fixing your loft or lie angle, moving the centre of gravity on your club heads, showing you how you can grip the club to adjust for a shaft that is too stiff, long, heavy, torquey, etc.
With modern technology, many of these fixes can be applied without you needing to buy new clubs, and best of all, can be done in 15 mins.
For example, to fix a fade or slice, most drivers and fairway woods have sleeves that will enable your club to have more loft and get more upright, or even more face closed.
There’ll also likely be movable weights on the head for you to adjust the centre of gravity, and in the case of a fade or slice, you’ll want to move the weight towards the heel of the club.
To fix a hook, do the exact opposite.
