Do not change shafts before reading this
Something you hear a lot from golfers who have re-shafted their clubs, is that the “shaft is the engine of the club”. But is this really true? Justin Rose gives us some clues.
For better or worse, the shaft change has made the club feel different, and for many, this increases another variable in their quest for the perfect club, and the perfect set.
But is the shaft really the heart of the club?
As a club fitter, I would love it if you believe that. Why? I’ll sell more shafts.
I would also want you to be on an endless search for shafts. Why? I’ll sell more shafts.
It’s the same with the golf industry at large, increase the variables, so they can sell more. Golfers tend to love the game, and many to the point of an “addiction” or “obsession”. The industry knows this, so the more confused they can make you, the more they will sell!
But that’s not what we’re about. We want you to improve your golf, that’s why we want you to get fitted – so that you walk out of our shop with what works, and you enjoy your golf.
That’s why we offer our 12 month, 3 session Distance & Direction Guarantee.
Come in and get fitted, and cut down the variables, not increase them!
Now that I got that out of my system, I was thinking about whether a shaft is really the heart of the club.
I had to conclude “no”.
I noticed Sergio Garcia went from TaylorMade to Callaway and then back to TaylorMade.
One could argue that this might be for commercial reasons, that TaylorMade just gave him a better deal.
So I thought about it more, and noticed how Justin Rose went from TaylorMade to Honma, and is now a free agent using a mixed bag.
Sergio Garcia was once the world number 2. Justin Rose was once world number 1, just 3 years ago, so if Sergio Garcia could get a sweet deal, so could Justin Rose.
How is this relevant?
If the shaft is really the engine of the golf club, then Sergio Garcia could have stayed at Callaway, and just used the shaft he was using at TaylorMade.

Justin Rose could have stayed at Honma, and used whatever shaft he wanted.
Instead he became a free agent, so that he could select his head and shaft combination, and not be tied into anyone particular head, while continuing to earn sponsorship dollars.
According to Golf Monthly, and Golf WRX, he’s currently using various different TaylorMade driver heads, TaylorMade fairway woods; a mix of Mizuno and Srixon irons; and Titleist wedges.
And they go on to detail the shafts he’s using with various heads.
As you can see, he mixes and matches the shafts and heads, and then mixes and matches the whole setup.
This led me to the conclusion that there’s no way a shaft can be considered the engine of the club.
Incidentally, we’re the Singapore custom shop for TaylorMade, Srixon, Mizuno and Titleist. We’re also fitters for the Mitsubishi Chemical and KBS shafts that Justin Rose uses.
